Our School

Viscount Alexander Public School

Our Students

There are approximately 185 students attending Viscount Alexander PS this year from the Sandy Hill community, which includes children from the various embassies in our neighborhood. At Viscount, we encourage our students to be proud of their school, linguistic background, and heritage. They are ambassadors for themselves and others as they represent us during school trips and at sporting events. Our graduates from the English Program go to grade 7 and 8 at York Street Public School and our graduates from the Early French Immersion go to Queen Elizabeth Public School.

Our Staff

Viscount Alexander has 15 teachers on staff, 4 early childhood educators, two educational assistant, a library technician, an office administrator, one office assistant, and two custodians. Our dedicated staff possesses many additional qualifications in Special Education, English as a Second Language, Music, Visual Arts, Physical Education and Computers in Education. Our custodial and office staffs provide valuable support and assistance to ensure the smooth and seamless running of the school.

Our Community

Our school has served this community since 1951. With our new French Immersion program, we can say that our school is now the community school for Sandy Hill. We are partnered with many community members who include the Sandy Hill Community Health Centre, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Kiwanis, and a strong liaison with the Education Program at the University of Ottawa. We are developing a new partnership with the Parent Resource Centre, creating links for school readiness and community activities in our Full Day Kindergarten Programs. Our many community volunteers from ONFE enhance our school’s resources as well. At Viscount we have well over fifty community volunteers. The Viscount Alexander School Council has been active in raising parental awareness of the issues that affect our children in both the short and long term. They are eager to serve the school community and are always receptive to new ideas.

Mission Statement

Viscount Alexander Public School stands for Caring, Commitment and Collaboration.

Facilities and Resources

We have spacious classrooms with tall, sunny windows in each room, a gymnasium, a stage, and an ever updating library. In addition we have a Kindergarten and grade school play structure and picnic tables. City tennis courts are adjacent to the Viscount yard and the Sandy Hill Arena for skating is across the street. We are also in close proximity to the University of Ottawa where our students attend swimming lessons. The Rideau River and canal are close by for outdoor activities such as skating or outdoor education. Our students are able walk to the National Arts Centre, the National Art Gallery and Museum of Nature which allows for numerous field trips.

Our School

Viscount Alexander Public School is a dual track school with a JK-6 English/EFI program that opened its doors in 1951. The Sandy Hill location is ideal for our students because we are located in the vicinity of the University of Ottawa, close to a number of community resources as well as the longest skating rink in the world. Many of our volunteers come from the surrounding neighborhood.

Our mission statement reflects that children come first and their individual needs are our priority. We extend caring, collaboration and commitment to every student, their parents, and the community. Working together as a positive, optimistic family, we focus on preparing our students academically, socially and physically for an ever-changing and demanding society. The staff of Viscount Alexander Public School would like to extend a warm welcome to our families both old and new. We look forward to working with you, our parents and community, through parent conferences, the volunteer program, school council, and special events. Together we can all strive to make Viscount Alexander a safe and caring school in which our students feel included and challenged as they take part in the exciting voyage of discovery and learning.
